How to play crossword games

The objective of any crossword game is to fill in the words and letters in the blank squares. Carefully read the numbered list of clues to work out the right words. The clues in the list marked 'Across' are written from left to right, starting from the square with the corresponding number. The clues in the list marked 'Down' must be filled in vertically, from top to bottom.

Where words intersect, the letters you have already filled in will help you solve the other clues. With each correct answer leading to additional hints, crossword games offer a deeply satisfying puzzle experience.

Tips and tricks to solve crossword clues

When playing crossword puzzles, it helps to understand the types of clues you might encounter in our free crossword puzzles. Getting familiar with the conventions of this puzzle game genre will also boost your chances of solving the clues.

What types of clues do crossword puzzles feature?

Crossword puzzles often feature a range of different clues. The most straightforward of these are called straight clues. These are often descriptions or synonyms of the answer, or a fill-in-the-blanks phrase. These 'quick' clues are more popular in American crossword puzzles.

Indirect clues include wordplay or metaphors that require a more creative approach. You can often recognize these clues by the phrasing. For instance, a description followed by 'perhaps', or a question mark.

British crossword puzzles often feature more cryptic clues. These include homophones, embedded words, and anagrams contained within part of the clue's phrasing. Crafting these mind-bending clues is its own art form, and decoding them is an extremely rewarding experience.

Crossword conventions

Clues and their corresponding answers always match in tense and number. So, if the clue refers to a plural, the answer should be plural, too. For example, "fluffy scarves" is the clue to "boas". The same goes for clues rendered in the past or present tense.

If the answer is a name or phrase consisting of multiple words, spaces are generally ignored. You can leave them out when filling in the answer. The same goes for punctuation marks.
