How to play online Match-3 games

The goal in Match-3 games is to sort a board packed with jewels, candy, fruit, and other items. Make the items swap places to create a line or cluster of three or more of the same ones. Many of these games are inspired by the game mechanics and visual effects of PopCap's Bejeweled series from 2001, and King's Candy Crush Saga, which first appeared roughly a decade later.

Usually, there will be a special level objective for the player to complete. This might include collecting particular icons, or clearing away locked tiles and other obstacles. These objectives can be achieved by moving the items on the board and creating lines or columns of three or more matching icons. This chain will then disappear, and new icons will fall down to fill the empty spaces.

Sometimes, the tumbling items will form new matches automatically, creating a chain reaction. This is called a cascade, and is usually worth a lot of bonus points.

Merge games and other tile-matching games

There are lots of variations on Match 3 games, including Bubble Shooter arcade games. In these games, players must combine clusters of three or more matching bubbles.
